LOCOMOTION March 2024 Newsletter

Date

LOCOMOTION Public Webinars

LOCOMOTION is hosting a series of free public webinars to share the findings from our study and give people the opportunity to ask questions about the research and its results.

In February and March 2024, we hosted the first two webinars in this series. Follow the links below to find out more and view recordings of these webinars.

Webinar 1 - Assessments in a Long COVID Clinic

The first presentation in this webinar discussed the results of using the NASA Lean Test to assess the prevalence of orthostatic intolerance in Long COVID clinic patients.

This was followed by a presentation about the psychometric analysis of a Long COVID specific Patient Reported Outcome Measure (PROM) - The Modified Covid-19 Yorkshire Rehabilitation Scale (C19-YRSm).

Webinar 2 - Inclusive Practice in Long COVID Treatment and Support

This webinar contained two presentations, which focussed on patient experience and good practice in relation to inclusive practice in Long COVID treatment and support.

Upcoming Webinars

There will more LOCOMOTION webinars over the next few months, you can stay updated with the webinars as they are announced by registering you interest on our webinar page.

Prevalence of orthostatic intolerance in Long COVID clinic patients and healthy volunteers: A multicenter study

New LOCOMOTION paper, published in the Journal of Medical Virology, looks at using the NASA Lean Test (NLT) to assess the prevalence of orthostatic intolerance (OI) in Long COVID clinic patients. The study found that more than half of Long COVID patients experienced OI symptoms during the NLT and more than one in ten patients met the criteria for either postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) or orthostatic hypotension (OH), half of whom did not report previous typical OI symptoms. Following these findings, the paper recommends that all patients attending Long COVID clinics are offered an NLT and appropriate management commenced.

Long COVID Clinical Severity Types Based on Symptoms and Functional Disability A Longitudinal Evaluation

New LOCOMOTION paper, published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine, explores the pattern and consistency of Long COVID clinical severity types over time. The study found that the pattern of three clinical severity types is consistent over time, with patients also switching between severity types, indicating the fluctuating nature of Long COVID.

This paper was originally published as a pre-print with The Lancet. The pre-print has received 500 downloads, as of 1st April 2024, and was recently listed on SSRN's Top Ten download list for; COVID-19 eJournal Top Ten, MedRN Subject Matter eJournals Top Ten, Medical Research Network Top Ten and Preprints with The Lancet Top Ten.

Cognitive dysfunction after covid-19: Lay Summary

With the help of our Patient Advisory Group, we have created a 'lay summary' of our BMJ Practice Pointer - Cognitive dysfunction after covid-19. A lay summary is a brief description of a research article written for a general audience.

LOCOMOTION Resources

In addition to scientific publications and webinars, another output of our study are resource documents. A resources page has been added to our website to host the two resource documents that we have recently published.

LOCOMOTION Vocational Rehabilitation Roadmap

Our first resource document is a vocational rehabilitation roadmap developed specifically for people with Long COVID. This resource guides a clinician through the process of identifying and helping someone to overcome some of the various work-related obstacles caused by Long COVID symptoms and/or the workplace.

Long COVID - Managing Cognitive Changes

Our second resource document focusses on managing cognitive changes in relation to Long COVID. It contains information about what cognitive dysfunction/brain fog is, what causes cognitive problems after Covid-19, practical strategies for managing cognitive changes, and helpful services and resources.

C19-YRS publication in top 10% of Journal of Medical Virology 2022 downloads

A publication by members of the LOCOMOTION team has received enough downloads to rank within the top 10% of papers published in an issue of Journal of Medical Virology between 1st January - 31st December 2022, up to 12 months after publication.

The publication tested the psychometric properties of the C19-YRS (Long COVID patient reported outcome measure) using Rasch analysis and modified the scale based on analysis findings, emerging information on essential PCS symptoms, and feedback from a working group of patients and professionals.
